Women on Web has released new research that examines where abortion seekers around the world are using ChatGPT to access WoW’s website and to access abortion.
WoW’s research showed:
👆 ChatGPT has emerged as a new pathway to Women on Web. In 2024, the organization’s main website received only 431 clicks and 38 requests for abortion pills from ChatGPT. In 2025, Women on Web received 8,623 clicks and 1,167 requests for abortion pills.
🌍 56.70% of all clicks come from just 10 countries- the majority of which maintain highly restrictive abortion laws. The Philippines, Peru, Brazil, Poland, and Mexico are the top five countries for clicks.
💊 The Philippines, Brazil, USA and Indonesia have higher abortion pill request rates from ChatGPT than from other sources of traffic, which suggests that users from these countries may be more deliberately seeking abortion services through ChatGPT.
These findings represent a significant moment in an evolving online information access ecosystem. The use of AI-driven chatbots like ChatGPT has exploded over the past few years, and now abortion seekers living in restrictive contexts are using these bots to successfully access abortion information and care.
While it is encouraging to see this new pathway to abortion care open up to care seekers, we have seen new digital pathways open up and then later contract (such as various forms of social media), and there are growing concerns about privacy and threats of censorship in AI chatbot responses.
Moving forward, Women on Web will be exploring care seekers’ experience using AI tools before, during, and after having an abortion to better understand the needs and motivations of care seekers who use Women on Web’s service.
