How does the abortion pill service work in the US
The medication is prescribed by a U.S.-based doctor and shipped in a discreet package containing generic versions of mifepristone and misoprostol. Using generic medicines helps keep the service affordable and independent from U.S. supply chains, which have faced political attacks and unscientific scrutiny.

Abortion pills in a nutshell
The abortion pills you receive are mifepristone and misoprostol.
- First, take mifepristone to stop the pregnancy from continuing.
- Then, 24–48 hours later, take the misoprostol pills. These cause cramping and bleeding, helping your body pass the pregnancy tissue.
Both medicines are listed by the World Health Organization as Essential Medicines and are safer to use than many common household painkillers. When used within the first trimester, medication abortion is about 98% effective and safer than childbirth.
