Privacy International (PI) and Women on Web (WoW) are pleased to announce the launch of Securing Reproductive Justice, a guide to digital privacy for sexual and reproductive justice (SRJ) activists.
10/03/2026
PI and WoW’s creation of this guide was motivated by the increasing threats and hostile environments that activists face in digital spaces. SRJ defenders are facing growing risks of surveillance and consequently are having to adapt how they work, to protect themselves and the people they support.
To better understand these threats, PI and WoW conducted a survey with SRJ activists to gauge threats and fears around digital safety and privacy. Some of the key learnings from the learning included the following:
- Most respondents used their own personal devices to conduct their work, but only half had received formal training on how to protect their devices
- Only 25% of activists reporting using a virtual private network (VPN)
- 65% of respondents shared fears of being surveilled, and respondents shared that they were particularly afraid of being surveilled by opposition groups, government actors, and/or law enforcement agencies
Based on these findings, alongside our organisations’ existing research and expertise, we developed Securing Reproductive Justice to help activists take concrete steps to better protect their privacy online and on their devices. It includes steps activists can take to protect their data on social media and messaging apps, as well as measures to help secure your devices and minimise online tracking, including how to use features like disposable email addresses and VPNs.
