Each person’s process is different, and the experiences can vary widely.
Mifepristone alone usually does not cause any side effects. Some people may experience light cramps, bleeding and headache. These symptoms are normal.
The main way that misoprostol works is through cramping and bleeding. It can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, and fever. These symptoms are normal and typically disappear within a few hours after your last dose of misoprostol.
Passing the pregnancy: After taking misoprostol, you should get bleeding and cramps. These usually start after 1-4 hours, but sometimes later. Bleeding and cramps are often heavier than a normal period and become more intense until the pregnancy comes out. On average, this happens within 4-5 hours, but it can take longer. Some people may see the sac (which is white or grayish), the embryo, or the foetus when it passes, while others may only see clots. The bleeding and cramps usually slow down once the pregnancy has passed.
How long will bleeding continue: Passing all of the pregnancy tissue takes time. It is normal to have on-and-off bleeding, spotting, and/or cramps for days or weeks after taking misoprostol. This will slowly decrease. Your period will usually return 4-8 weeks after the abortion.
Returning to regular activities: You can go back to your regular activities as soon as you feel up to it. You can have sex whenever you are ready. It is possible to get pregnant very soon after an abortion, even if you are still bleeding, so you may consider using contraception.
