If you did not bleed or only had very little bleeding after using the pills, please get an ultrasound. This will help to determine the cause and next steps. It is possible that:
- You may have an ongoing pregnancy as the pills are not 100% effective.
- You may have a “missed abortion”. This means that the pregnancy ended but did not come out. This is a common form of miscarriage and you should be offered treatment by your local health worker. The recommended treatment is either with additional misoprostol or with vacuum aspiration. Alternatively, you can also wait for your body to naturally expel the tissue.
- You may have an ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy outside of the womb. The pills will not work in this case. An ongoing ectopic pregnancy is very dangerous and requires immediate medical intervention. When you have an ultrasound, it is not necessary to tell the health worker that you used abortion pills. You can say that you think you had a miscarriage. The health worker cannot see the difference, and the treatment is the same. There are no tests that can show you have used abortion pills.
