2000 Nigerian women die every year due to unsafe abortion

2,000 Nigerian women die of unsafe abortion every single year with Northeast of the country recording highest rate, says Dr. Lamai, Head of Department, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

On Tuesday in the Nigerian city Gombe, Dr. Lamai exposed this fact at the capacity building workshop for journalist on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (WSRHR) organized by the international NGO Ipas Nigeria.

He mentioned that the rate contributed to 13% of mortality in Nigeria as the number of women who died from abortion is larger than those who passed away because of malaria. According to Lamai, every eight minutes a women dies of unsafe abortion methods, and it is estimated that 220,000 children are left motherless every year due to that. He advised to fully educate the public on how to undergo safe abortion thus reducing the number of deaths in Nigeria.

The Ipas Country Director, Mrs Hauwa Shekarau, said the goal of the training was to equip journalist with national, regional, international and legal framework for the protection of WSRHR. She said that she hopes the training would change the attitude of the media on the issues around WSRHR. Shekarau said that Ipas was working with lawmakers and other stakeholders on the importance of safe abortion services, in order to reduce high rate of death in the country.
