Queensland Australia decided to take abortion out of criminal code
Last week Queensland parliament decided to decriminalize pregnancy termination up to 22 weeks gestation.
The historic law will finally change, women will have legal and safe access to abortion and clinics will be surrounded by a free zone to protect women from harassment.
The Termination of Pregnancy Bill allows the termination of a pregnancy up to 22 weeks of gestation and after 22 weeks with consent from two independent doctors.
Safe access zones of 150 metres will be introduced around the clinics to protect women from experiencing harassment from anti-abortion activists.
Abortion will also be removed from the criminal code and made a health issue.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the law change offered parliament a chance to make history.
The premier mentioned she had believed, a woman should be able to talk to her doctor about her own health and her own body without it being a crime.
After this decision, New South Wales is now the only Australian jurisdiction where abortion is a criminal offence.
