About the "I had an abortion" project

This project is in support of women seeking abortions, to promote access to this basic right, and bring about social change. Women who have had abortions do not need to suffer in anonymous silence any longer.

Abortion is the most performed medical intervention. Every year, one of each four pregnant women decide to have an abortion for all sorts of private reasons. Due to the taboo, shame and stigma most women keep silent about their abortions. Most women experiencing an unwanted pregnancy think they are an exception. Lawmakers ignore the consequences of unsafe and illegal abortions. Women are ostrizised and criminalised.
The reality of abortion must be brought out into the open, so that every woman can have access to reliable information and support. This project enables you to share your stories, your portrait and contribute to the solidarity and support of women around the world.

This site is a forum for women who will not hide in shame but who will openly discuss their choices, who will let their voices be heard, either to show their support or to share their experiences. In doing so, they will help to end the systematic shaming of women around the world.

About the "I need an abortion" project

We are working to make sure that women can access safe abortion services to protect their lives and health.

Abortion is the single most performed medical intervention on the world. Still, many women do not have access to safe abortion

The online abortion helpservice can provide women living in countries where safe abortion is not accessible with information, medical guidance and a medical abortion. A medical abortion is a termination of pregnancy by using two medicines. These medicines, called Mifepriston and Misoprostol, provoke a spontaneous expulsion of the pregnancy from the uterus. The success rate is 98%. Mifepriston and Misoprostol are on the list of essential medicines of the World Health Organization.

The goal of this service is to help women around the world to obtain a safe medical abortion and to reduce the mortality and morbidity due to unsafe abortion. Each year 42 million women choose to have an abortion for all sorts of private reasons. In countries where safe abortion is not accessible, women seek unsafe services (20 million each year) as result of which every 7 minutes somewhere in the world a woman dies unnecessary (70.000 women each year). The online abortion help service makes self-induced abortions much safer and can prevent the recourse to dangerous backstreet abortions. The mortality of an unsafe abortion is 1:300. This means that when the service helped 3000 women it saved the lives of 10 women.
