Kathryn Birdwell

I had an abortion several years ago, at a time when I could not emotionally or financially care for a child. This was NOT my most difficult decision; it was one of my smartest and bravest. Do not let a conservative, judgmental family define you - there are people out there who will support your decision. Where would I be without those friends?

How old are you: Between 29 and 35

Year of abortion: 1997

Country of abortion:

I am lucky enough to have a remarkable group of friends that were supportive and understanding. Over the years, I have tried to never forget that and provide the same respectful support to my friends who have chosen to terminate a pregnancy.

Legal status: legal

Type of abortion: in a clinic or hospital with surgery

I was asked to pay additional money for pain medication, which luckily I had. Undergoing a surgical abortion without it seemed barbaric to me and I am horrified to think of the women who could not afford it.

Reason for abortion: financial issues, my education, my age (too young or old), problems with my relationship, mental health reasons, my personal reasons for not wanting a child

Feelings about abortion: disappointed, trapped, relieved, confident, ashamed

Religion no religion

Children: i have no children
