My husband and I had an abortion. After struggling to make a decision about what to do, Brad and I contacted a local clinic for a counseling session. We were asked to come in the next morning. The nurse treated us with dignity and respect asking a number of questions that would assess what i saw as our complete lack of preparation to birth a child at that time (financial, emotional, psychological, and physical). I had also spoken to my therapist, my minister and family members about all options available. After the interview, she spoke to the doctor and scheduled the session for the following week, providing me with recommendations on what to be prepared for and how much money we would need to buy any pain medication for recovery (in addition to the $400 fee for the procedure). At no point, did we feel judged or reprimanded. She was absolutely professional and also offered us information on other options in case we did want to pursue a pregnancy. With Brad's support and that of loving friends who understood our struggles, we went through the procedure with a peaceful mind and body. Two weeks later I was fully recovered.

How old are you: Between 25 and 31

Country of birth: Brazil

Year of abortion: 2000

Country of abortion: United States

My friends and family were extremely supportive of whatever decision we carefully considered for us. My mother, who is extremely catholic, was the only person who avoided the issue althogether and still does not speak of it any time it's brought up. I, after all these years, continue to dispell and confront her myths about women who have abortions (that they are suicidal, they don't contribute to society, they are never successful, they will develo cancer after x years, they are bad people, and so on) with my own life experience.

Type of abortion: in a clinic or hospital with surgery

A clean and quick medical procedure, followed by fast recovery under the care of a nurse. No psychological or physical traumas.

I will never understand why women and girls continue to be butchered and die because of a mistake or an accident during intercourse (that is assuming that they didnt get pregnant due to lack of information, sexual violence and so on). I truly hope one day we will be able to offer all women services like the one i had access to at a moment they most need (in addition to scientifically relevant sex ed, violence-free homes, proper services that promote our reproductive health, etc...).

Reason for abortion: financial issues, my education, my age (too young or old), physical health reasons, mental health reasons

Feelings about abortion: peaceful, relieved, confident, sure

Religion other

Children: i have no children
